describe one resource or type of equipment you could use to encourage children to explore and investigate?

and how does it do this?

at work (in a nursery aged 2-3)i have to provide the children with an activity and then basiclly answer that question but im stuck for thoughts

in my sons 2 year old classroom they have magnified glasses and they pick them up and explore everything.. they have all kinds of plastic bugs and insects on the table so they can explore! but they go all around the classroom ! it is too cute!
