How much should I charge to write 20 biographies?

I've just been asked to write 20 biographies for a company - not sure on length or if interviews are required yet - and I'm wondering how much I should charge. While I haven't performed any contract writing in the past, my writing skills are at a professional level (I'm a Communications Officer - 2 years experience). Would it be better to charge per hour or per bio?

Writers don't usually charge by the hour. They generally charge by word count, or accept a flat fee for each piece work which takes into account the time taken to research the piece. I've got no idea how much you should charge because I don't know what the going rate is where you live, what kind of company you're working for or how much you're in demand, but I strongly suggest you do a bit of market research. You might want to contact an agency that provides freelance writers and found out what kind of rates they usually expect a writer to get for that kind of work. In the UK, there's a journalists' union. If you're in the UK, or have something similar where you live, contact them and ask them for advice (and consider joining, too).

Two years' experience as a comms officer, by the way, isn't actually that much. Most freelancers have far more experience than two years in comms. I'm sure your writing skills are great, but having only two years' experience as a comms officer won't necessarily allow you to charge a fantastic rate straight away. The more freelancing you do, the more experience and credentials you'll have, though, and then you might be able to up your rates a bit.
