Ancient Nacre, Shale Discovery

Like the previous image in my stream here, these are very ancient shells are of psiloceras planorbis preserved in shale, found in Somerset, England. The creatures were not ammonites, but look like them a bit. They are ancient ancestors that derived from squids and mollusks. A close view seen in the large size is fascinating. The discovery of these fossils with the glowing nacre intact takes very delicate work indeed to release them from the shale matrix without destroying what is left of the shells.
