Question by Laura: How do you get teaching certification in San Diego?

I am interested in moving to San Diego after college. I am currently Majoring in art education and will be receiving my teaching certification at the end of my four year program. I'm not sure how to go about getting certified to teach in California once i move there.Since i already have my certification, will i just need to take a test or something? Does anybody know how this works? Thanks.

You may change your mind after this. I don't know what state you're in, but you need to find out if that state has reciprocity with California. (San Diego doesn't matter: educational requirements are decided by the state.) If they do, you'll take lots of tests and eventually get your credential. If they don't, you'll need to do a fifth year in California to do student teaching and get your credential. You may have to do that anyway, because California doesn't accept 4 year education degrees. You do a 5th year after your major here. You also need to know that we're in the middle of a budget crisis and that in most districts art was the first to go. In our district there are art teachers in the middle and high schools who also teach other subjects. Elementary art is handled by a volunteer parent group. Miracles can happen, but that's the way it is in the public schools. You might try to find private, charter, or parochial school opportunities.
